When the temperature outside drops below 10 degrees Celsius, it becomes an indispensable element of an infant's outfit jumpsuit or sleeping bag. Then we start with a long-sleeved body, a romper or rampers with long sleeves and legs, socks, and a jumpsuit on top. When it gets frosty outside, we can additionally put on a sweater, and under the rampers - tights.

Once the neonatal period has passed and the baby starts to move more and more, there is no need for him to be dressed warmer than adults. The toddler puts a lot of effort into all activities, so - in order not to overheat and be comfortable for him - we give up the extra layer of clothes.

When going for a walk with an infant, parents often dress them too thickly - guided by the fact that when adults move, the child lies in the stroller. This is of course true, but let's not forget that the baby in the gondola is protected from wind or cold by a hood and outer cover. In the case of two-, three-year-old and older children who will use the playground or ride a bicycle during the walk, we give up the additional layer - or choose one that can be removed quickly. Children who are constantly on the move sweat quickly and may feel too warm with an extra layer.

What about the hat?

Cap or other headgear - when is it really needed and when not? When staying at home, neither an infant nor an older child needs a headgear. We can cover the newborn's head with a thin cap or hood for a short time, right after bathing. Remember that otitis does not arise from overturning - it is a myth that still lingers. Otitis is caused by viruses or bacteria, often following a runny nose.

When we are on a walk with a child and there is no wind, a the temperature exceeds 20 degrees Celsius, this is even the case with younger infants we can give up the headgear, as long as we provide them with protection from the sun. Pat 15 degrees Celsius, a thin cotton cap will be useful, and when it is 10-15 degrees outside, it should be a bit thicker. At temperatures of several degrees or minus degrees, a hood from a suit or jacket can be used as an additional headgear.

What else is worth knowing about?

  • Remember to never cover the pram canopy with a nappy - neither in winter nor in summer. Consciousness is increasing in this regard, but there are parents or grandparents who still do it. It is better to get an umbrella that will protect your toddler from the sun without blocking the air flow.
  • We check the baby's body temperature not on the forehead or hands, but on the nape of the neck. If it is warm but not hot or sweaty, your baby is properly dressed.
  • Regardless of the season let's not give up on walks - even when there is no sun and the weather becomes less favorable. Walks, among other things, shape the immunity of our children.
