How to arrange a study place for a child?

Your own room is a place where the child should feel comfortable and comfortable. It is a kingdom where there should be a place to play, rest and learn. Organizing this multi-functional space is not easy. The most important thing is to arrange the child's room according to his interests, and to keep all the zones separated in it consistent.

Many parents ask themselves the question: how to prepare a study room for a child so that the environment and its decor not only do not interfere with learning, but also facilitate the acquisition of new skills and remembering knowledge. Regardless of whether you plan to prepare the perfect study room or just a place to do homework, it is worth remembering a few rules.

A place to study: desk and chair

A properly selected desk and chair are the basic elements of a study space. They must be adjusted to the child's height so that the sitting posture remains correct as long as possible. We wrote more about this in the article: Correct position of the child at the desk and in front of the computer. The desk area should be large enough to accommodate books, notebooks, a computer or other necessary accessories. This will certainly improve your learning efficiency. Drawers or containers will allow you to keep the necessary utensils, notebooks or notes always at hand.

You should also take care of adequate amount of space under the desk, for a comfortable sitting position. It's best to set up the desk near the window. Such a location will ensure access to an adequate amount of natural light. A student should not sit with his back to the door. This position may weaken his concentration as well as promote postural defects by adopting incorrect postures.

Study place: lighting

It is extremely important proper lighting of the study area. Properly selected natural and artificial light (preferably in a neutral color) will ensure the comfort of learning and will be eye-friendly. Good lighting should be especially taken care of in the autumn and winter period, when it gets dark quickly.

The expert advises:

The lamp on the desk should be placed on the left side for a right-handed child or on the right side for a left-handed child and illuminate only the study area. The distance between the lamp and the desk should be 35 - 50 cm. The light from the lamp must not be directed at the child's face, as it will blind it. It is also worth considering the overhead lighting. Thanks to it, we will avoid disproportions between a well-lit desk and the dark rest of the room.

Poorly selected lighting can cause headaches, eyeaches, drowsiness and even sight defects, which reduces the effectiveness and efficiency of learning.

Study place: colors

The colors of the walls and furniture in the study room have a huge impact on emotions, mood, concentration level and arousal. Cool, subdued colors (blue, green) favor calmness and concentration, while warm yellows or oranges stimulate. Before we decide on a specific color of the walls in a child's room, let's consider what kind of color support the child needs. Or maybe instead of colorful walls, play with the selection of appropriate colorful accessories that will enliven the place to study without distracting its user.

Study room: arrangements

Properly selected desk, chair and lighting are not the only elements necessary to create the best place to study. We cannot forget about cool, functional gadgets that will help organize the space on and around the desk.

If the desk has drawers and cupboards, it is worth equipping them with organizers or separators. Thanks to them, all stationery, paper clips, erasers and cards will have their place. When the desk is small, it is worth investing in an extension or a hanging shelf. It will fit containers, among others for pens, highlighters, crayons. They will be at hand, but will not take up the space to study on the desk. An interesting solution may be to hang the organizer on the wall above the desk and place stationery in its containers, or compartments for cards and notes. The bookcase next to the desk can be used as a technical support for a place to study. You can put used books, notebooks, artworks or plasticine, paint and glue on it.

The expert advises:

In an ideal study room, there must be space for a cork or magnetic board on which necessary notes, information, photos or drawings will be hung. Appropriate arrangement of a study place is primarily a limitation of the number of gadgets on the desk. This allows you to maintain order and promotes concentration and focus on learning. Order in the entire child's room is equally important. A mess on the floor, chaos among toys, books or an unmade bed will distract your child. That is why it is important that books, toys and other items in the room are best placed in closed cabinets, bookcases or boxes, and that the bedroom area is always lined.

The best place to study: which is what?

A place to learn is not only a properly prepared space on a desk for doing homework or exploring knowledge. It is also a place to rest and develop interests. Learning will be more effective if, during the break (5 minutes break after 30 minutes of work), the child will be able to stretch out on a soft pouf, sit in a comfortable armchair or do some exercises on a mat or a wall ladder.

Science and leisure

Therefore, it is worth organizing a small relaxation zone for the child in the room.  As important as a place to learn, there is a place to develop interests and passions. It can be an additional work space or a table, e.g. for art works, for active people - a sports corner, and a bookcase with books and a comfortable hanging cocoon for bookworms.

However, it is not always possible for a child to have their own room. In such a case, it should be provided with a quiet, peaceful space, where there is no heavy domestic traffic or other distractions. You should avoid studying in your room with the TV turned on or doing your homework at the coffee table in the living room.

Comfort at work and well-being of the child

In a perfectly arranged room or study space separated from the common home space, the most important thing is the child's comfort and well-being. Thanks to this, they will achieve full focus, concentration, and the efficiency of their work will significantly increase. So let's invite the child to plan together and arrange the best place for him to study according to the above guidelines. Good luck!
