When parents are expecting their first child, they do not know exactly what to expect, what will be an essential and what will be a completely redundant piece of equipment for an infant room. Only after that, think about what furniture, accessories and accessories you will need. If you are not sure how to arrange a room for a newborn and what should be in your baby's environment, we have practical tips for you.

What should it look like children's room for an infant and what items of equipment should it contain?

  • painted in a light color of the wall;
  • crib;
  • comfortable armchair;
  • a chest of drawers with clothes and cosmetics for baby care;
  • a lamp that gives a soft light.

In the further part of the article, you will learn why these elements are so important and why they should not be missing in your baby's room.

Together or separately?

This is the most important dilemma that young parents must resolve. Both solutions have advantages and disadvantages. Convenience is the main argument in favor of leaving the child (in the initial period) in the parents' bedroom.

Newborns and infants often wake up at night, need to be fed and changed – even every 1,5 hours.

For this very reason, many parents initially put their baby's cot next to theirs. Others, in turn, decide to accustom a new family member from a small one to a separate space, even by arranging a small room for a baby. The advantage of this solution is that the parents' bedroom still remains their common space, which has a positive effect on partner relations. However, waking up to a sleeping child in the other room can be quite burdensome and tiring. Regardless of which variant you decide on, remember to prepare the space where you will stay with your baby in such a way that it is functional and safe for both you and your baby.

When arranging a room for a newborn or a baby corner in the parents' bedroom, let's take into account the child's needs and our own comfort. Many years of experience in the field of giving opinions have made us pay special attention to safety, functionality, comfort and aesthetics. We encourage you to consider the same aspects when arranging baby rooms. This way you can be sure that your little one grows up in a safe and development-friendly space. Too many room furnishings, bright colors or an excess of stimuli can affect the immature nervous system of a child, and thus have a negative impact on its development.

How to arrange a baby corner in the parents' bedroom?

Not all parents have the opportunity to find a separate, even very small room for a baby. In this case, you need to be smart and the ability to arrange space. At the beginning it is worth considering how to enlarge the space available in the parents' bedroom, to fit a baby corner in it. Perhaps it is worth replacing a large bed with a fold-out sofa, and replacing the impractical TV table with, for example, a chest of drawers.

If it is not possible to arrange a separate room, it is worth investing in multifunctional and folding furnituree.g. a cot with a bedding drawer, a changing table for mounting on the wall. Equipment that can be hung should be fixed in a permanent way, e.g. on the wall, so as not to take up unnecessary space on the floor. You can also consider putting up a screen to separate the place where your baby sleeps from the rest of the room.

Where to start decorating baby room?

It is best to start any renovation work early enough to be able to finish it 1-2 weeks before the expected birth of the baby. The point is that the toddler should not be exposed to the smell (fumes) of freshly painted walls or wood varnish. When choosing products for renovating a room, it is best to ask the seller about paint and varnish certificates intended for a children's room. Thanks to this, you will be sure that the products you buy are safe for your little one. Both the floor and walls in baby rooms should be durable and easy to clean: infancy will pass quickly, and children have endless amounts of creativity.

Another important decision is choice of room colors. There are many wallpapers with colorful patterns on the market. We should remember, however, that while the baby does not care whether it has a wallpaper in a teddy bear or hearts, a preschooler may like it less.

So if you do not plan your next renovation quickly, it is better to choose subdued colors of the walls and, for example, stickers that can be easily removed from the wall when they get bored. Also, do not choose too dark and intense colors - they can tire your child's eyesight and additionally darken the interior.

 How to arrange a room for a newborn?

When arranging a children's room or a corner, think about what activities you will be doing in it. The most important of these are changing and feeding. With this in mind, plan the purchase of furniture and accessories, and the arrangement of space.

A place to sleep

However, the most important element of room equipment for your child at the beginning of his life is a cot. This is where the baby will spend most of its time. You can read about how to choose the best mattress and cot in a separate articlein the meantime, let's consider what other elements should be in the baby's room.

A place to feed

A comfortable armchair on which you can cuddle and feed your child is an optional, but important element of a children's room. This is important especially when mom is planning to breastfeed: often, the feedings take a long time and a comfortable armchair is very important due to the good support of the mother's spine and the possibility of better latching the baby to the breast. By the way, it is worth thinking about a table next to the armchair so that you can put something to drink, a book or a phone there. Even if you prefer to feed in a prone position, a sitting area in a corner or baby's room can also prove useful.

A place to change

Another important element is changing table or chest of drawers with changing top. The things you will use most often, such as changing cosmetics, diapers and clothes, should be within easy reach. Think about where you will put them, because you can't even move away from the changing table for a moment, if a child is lying on it.

Storage space

Also try to find a place right away first toys and books. Consider buying new / additional furniture if it is difficult to find free space in the ones you have. Certainly, a place for cosmetics and necessary things will also be useful. All wardrobes and shelves should be attached to the wall so that they do not fall over on a crawling or walking toddler. Remember that about 40% of accidents involving children occur in their own homes, which is why the functional and safe development of the apartment space is so important.

Lighting

As for room lighting, this in addition to the lamp that illuminates the entire room, a night lamp that gives subdued light will also be useful with yellow light. It will be useful for falling asleep, feeding at night and carrying out any activities at night.

Baby room: how to choose furniture?

Furniture for a baby's room should meet requirements of European standards, incl. in terms of strength, chemical and design. We pay special attention to this during any opinion-giving work. For each element of furniture for a children's room, a different standard applies, according to which the product made guarantees the safety of users.

  • In terms of chemistry, that is the safety of the adhesives, paints and varnishes used children's furniture should meet the requirements of the toy standard EN 71which ensures that they are safe for children, e.g. in terms of migration of elements, including heavy metals, or the occurrence of formaldehyde, which is harmful to the nervous system.
  • In terms of endurance the standard applies EN 1725.

However, manufacturers are not required to include this information on product packaging or in their commercial offer, so it is worth asking sellers whether the furniture has been tested by an independent laboratory and is certified by an international certification body, e.g. in Poland, PCA or German TUV and SGS.

Safe products, checked by the so-called an independent third party, such as the Institute of Mother and Child, is marked with the compliance mark appropriate to the given unit.
