  • feed on demand – 8-12 times a day, at least once at night;
  • check your feeding technique, if in doubt, consult CDL;
  • don't harden your nipples — scrubbing/rubbing/pulling nipples has no proven effectiveness in relieving pain during feeding and may worsen the problem of sore nipples;

In the case of bitten nipples, it is recommended to lubricate them with your own food after each feeding. This action will speed up healing and has antibacterial properties. Ointments, e.g. with lanolin or special compresses soaked in soothing and antibacterial substances, are also great for treating injured nipples while breastfeeding. Use them according to the leaflet on the packaging.

  • in the case of bitten warts, to prevent the skin from drying out while bathing wash your breasts with a mild gel or soap. Dry your nipples gently with a clean cotton towel or disposable paper towel;
  • In the hygiene of nipples injured during feeding, the so-called airing, i.e. ensuring a constant supply of air to the breasts: frequent walking without a bra, wearing only non-compressive bras made of natural, breathable materials.
  • change nursing pads often and replace bras regularly with clean ones;

In such a situation, it is recommended to consult a doctor immediately, because pus oozing from a bitten nipple most often indicates a breast abscess. In case of inflammation or breast abscess, you can continue breastfeeding. The food is safe for the baby. However, when there is pus in the milk, the situation may require pumping and pouring out the milk from the "sick" breast while feeding the healthy breast. Therapy and treatment will be selected depending on the need. The doctor will prescribe appropriate treatment and, if weaning from the affected breast is necessary, will tell you when it is time to return to breastfeeding with the healed breast.

Can you breastfeed if your sore nipples have resulted in mastitis treated with antibiotics? In case of mastitis, doctors prescribe antibiotics to women, which do not require discontinuation baby from the breast.
