When it comes to physical preparation of the body in the last days of pregnancy and immediately before delivery, a lot depends on the planned route of delivery. The expert advises:

Women planning natural childbirth usually do not know when it will occur, so it is difficult to plan all preparations carefully. It is not uncommon that the delivery surprises the future mother earlier and all the preparations and plans are not implemented. Fortunately, there is nothing terrible when it comes to preparing the body for childbirth. None of the listed treatments are necessary for the baby to come into the world. Childbirth will happen anyway, no matter how we prepare ourselves.

Prepartum shaving and enema are not mandatory parts of labor preparation, but only options for the comfort of the woman. When it comes to manicures and pedicures, it can have an impact on diagnostics during labor.

How to prepare for childbirth: enema before childbirth

According to the latest recommendations, there are no medical indications for pre-delivery enemas. In Polish hospitals, the routine use of enemas in preparation for both natural delivery and elective caesarean section has long since been abandoned. However, many women still ask if they will have an enema, or if it is necessary or feasible in the hospital.

The expert advises:

Future mothers are afraid of having a bowel movement during childbirth. In the era of family births, it is especially important for them. It is true that the intestine, filled before birth, will empty under the pressure of the nascent head, but the woman's body prepares for childbirth by cleansing itself naturally when contractions begin. When this happens, you will have little or no stool during labor. However, if the expectant mother suffers from constipation, she can make a rectal enema at home.

Performing an enema at home

Home enema kits are available at the pharmacy. The procedure itself is easy to perform, although it may not be that simple for a pregnant woman due to the pregnancy belly. In the product leaflet you can find several recommended ways to administer the rectal solution and a detailed description of how to make the infusion to be effective. If a woman herself has a problem with doing such an enema at home, she can do it together with her partner or ask for it to be done in the hospital.

It is worth noting that sometimes the use of an enema may increase uterine contractions. Women giving birth again, if they so wish, should use it at the beginning of their systolic activity.

Glycerin suppositories as an alternative to an enema

An alternative to the enema can be glycerin suppositories. If your last bowel movement was a few days ago, they will definitely be a good solution. The application of suppositories is easy and the waiting time for the effect takes about 20-30 minutes. The action of suppositories is milder than that of enemas. Glycerin suppositories are available at a pharmacy without a prescription. Unused items from the packaging may be useful in the puerperium.

If the expectant mother is waiting for the delivery in the hospital or is preparing for induction of labor, she may raise the question of suppositories or enemas in the ward. The hospital staff should help the mother-to-be in this matter.

Shaving before giving birth

Shaving the intimate area before childbirth is also not necessary for delivery to take place, but most women use this to prepare their perineum for childbirth. It is worth remembering that epilation before birth is not necessary. A woman may choose to shave before giving birth, but only for her own comfort. If, for medical reasons, it is considered necessary by the hospital staff to shave the perineum before delivery, should obtain the patient's consent in advance.

In hospital wards, it is not recommended to use a disposable razor for shaving the perineum. Hospitals should be equipped with special clippers with disposable cutting blades. They are used to shorten the hair, not to shave it "to zero".

The expert advises:

If the expectant mother has lush hair and is comfortable with it, she may not shave the perineum at all or decide on the indirect form recommended by most specialists, i.e. shortening the hair. This form of body preparation for childbirth leaves no irritation, and the shortening of the hair to about 5-10 mm has a positive effect on the healing of perineal or postoperative wounds. Shortened hairs sweat less, and cleansing agents remove dirt more easily when the hair is shorter. Keeping the wound area clean and dry is essential for proper wound healing.
