In this article you will learn:

    It might seem that a baby needs the loving arms of their parents to be completely happy, yet store shelves are littered with traps like stuffed animals, teethers, books, rattles, and so on, all of which seem almost essential to expectant parents. Is this really the case? Of course not. While we don't deny the need to stimulate a child with new stimuli, it's worth approaching baby shopping sensibly. However, there is a certain group of toys that have been a staple in almost every child's childhood for generations. These are, of course, cuddly toys.

    Our child's favorite cuddly toy fulfills a double role. Firstly, it gives the child a sense of security, thanks to which it is easier to calm down or fall asleep, and secondly - it is a great playmate. Below we suggest which cuddly toy for sleeping or playing is worth attention, and why various types of mascots and other toys should not be too much in the child's environment.

    What a cuddly toy for a baby

    The selection of cuddly toys, stuffed animals and other stuffed animals is huge. We can choose freely in sizes, textures, finishes and colors.

    Expert advises

    Cuddly toys for babies and older children can be classic, teddy bears, but not only. It is important that teddy bears and other teddy bears intended for toddlers are not made of long-haired plush, which can easily break off and end up in a child's mouth.

    Toys for the youngest children should, above all, be safe . Therefore, when buying cuddly toys for babies, pay attention to:

    • chemical safety, i.e. certificates confirming that the materials used do not contain substances that could, for example, irritate the skin and mucous membranes of a child, or cause an allergic reaction;
    • type of fabrics, knitwear, plush or fur - in cuddly toys for babies (up to 1 year old), the bristles should be short so that they do not detach even with frequent washing and intensive use, otherwise it may end up in the child's mouth;
    • production quality, that is, above all, durability and care of the finish - so that during play no element tears off or falls off, becoming a threat to the toddler, e.g. if swallowed or inserted into the nose or ear. For this reason, you should not choose cuddly toys with an excessive amount of decorations.

    When considering which baby cuddly toy will be the best, remember to keep it clean.

    Sleeping cuddly toy for babies

    A hug with a wrap

    An interesting group of cuddly toys for babies are those with a blanket. This isn't a classic blanket, but a soft, small piece of fabric, usually with the head of a teddy bear or other animal attached . The whole thing is small, so it's easy to take on a walk or trip – it's useful for covering or comforting your little one when needed. These toys have several functions: some can, for example, "store" the parent's scent when they need to go out, while others have knots at the ends to attach a pacifier or teether.

    Noise to calm down and sleep

    However, there is a group of cuddly toys for children designed specifically to soothe babies and help parents. Their purpose is to soothe a crying baby. These are teddy bears (or other stuffed animals) with a battery-powered humming module inside. When the device is turned on, the baby calms down and falls asleep more easily. Just make sure the sound isn't too loud.

    Good toys of this type automatically turn off when the baby falls asleep. The sounds emitted are designed to imitate the humming sound the baby heard while in the mother's womb. We wrote more about the effects of noise and humming toys here.

    Various models of this type of cuddly toy are available on the market, including those that can be hung on strollers, for example. Of course, there are as many opinions about humming teddy bears as there are parents, but if you have a demanding little one at home, it's worth trying it out, especially since the toy can last a long time. When your little one grows up, you can remove the humming module, turning it into a classic cuddly toy.

    Musical relief

    The same applies to cuddly toys, such as teddy bears, which have a built-in music module . Most often, this is very calming music, perfect for falling asleep, which is intended to have a soothing effect on the baby. Some of these plush toys also have a built-in projector that projects stars and other shapes onto the ceiling.

    Regardless of the type, any cuddly toy for sleeping for babies, especially the youngest ones, must be used with care - it should not be placed in the cot close to the baby's head. Humming or musical toys are often equipped with handles, thanks to which you can hang them at a safe distance.

    Cuddly toys to play with

    For several years now, the market has seen a proliferation of children's stuffed animals in contrasting colors, such as black, white, and red. These often have hands, ears, or legs filled with rustling material, making them perfect as playthings, but not as sleep aids.

    When it comes to colors, the combination of black and white, as well as large, clear shapes and simple patterns work especially for newborns and younger infants, because until about 2 months of age, the child cannot distinguish other colors and sees not very clearly (blurred contours) .

    Cuddly toys at home and on the go

    A cuddly toy that a child particularly enjoys can become their friend and playmate for the next few years. A child will feel safe with it, both when falling asleep at home and when traveling, for example, to visit Grandma and Grandpa—especially if they're staying overnight. It's a good idea to have a favorite teddy bear or rabbit with them.

    What cuddly toys for children to choose and how to care for them?

    Remember to pay attention to the quality and manufacture of cuddly toys for children - especially if we want them to last longer.

    Expert advises

    Cuddly toys for babies and children should be soft and pleasant to the touch, and at the same time durable, so that they can be washed in a washing machine - after all, they will be heavily used. We should also pay attention to the fact that all their elements are properly attached - nothing that our toddler could swallow cannot break off, even during intensive use. As in the case of all children's toys and textiles, let's check whether the raw materials used are safe for toddlers - this is confirmed by the approvals of independent research units.

    If frequent washing of the cuddly toy at a higher temperature is not an option, we can take care of its cleanliness using steam generators that allow you to refresh and remove unpleasant odors from various types of textiles, maintaining their original appearance.

    The cuddly toy: one instead of many

    We have mentioned many times in our articles about how overloaded the market for baby products is. Starting from the basic ones - such as hygiene items, cots, prams, through all kinds of accessories, wardrobe items, children's interior design, to ... toys.

    Expert advises

    It is obvious that no objects, including toys, can replace our time and attention. Therefore, let's take care of the mutual pleasure of spending time together effectively, which is not much on a daily basis, but - in accordance with the principle that what counts is quality, not quantity - let's use it as well as possible. Thanks to this approach, it will turn out that our child does not need a huge number of toys and cuddles, especially since they are not always smart, creative and informative. Glowing and playing plastic, motley toys will attract our toddler's attention only for a moment.

    The trick is to avoid succumbing to the pressure of constantly buying new things, but to build on and use what we already have in different ways. Moreover, with a limited number of toys, children will come up with different uses for them. Instead of constantly replacing them with new ones, they'll think about what else they can do with the ones they already have.

    Why less is more?

    There are many reasons not to overdo it with the number of stuffed animals and other toys you buy your child . Here are a few:

    • Lots of toys are hard to keep in order. Aesthetic considerations aside, messy toys simply take up space that could be used for play;
    • It's easier to find the toys we want to use because they're not piled high;
    • With a limited number of toys, children play with one for longer, which helps them learn to concentrate;
    • A smaller number makes children learn to respect their possessions more and more willingly share them with siblings or peers;
    • Buying timeless toys allows us to take care of the home budget. Let us not give in to fairy-tale heroes, who change very often. Let's talk to the child, spend time with him, thus showing that the teddy bear, which has been with them for a long time, is still a perfect companion to play.

    "Armed" with the above tips, we can go on a quest and decide for ourselves which cuddly toy for a baby and an older child will be the best - and maybe even become his favorite.
