Which baby pillow should you choose? You can answer with one word: NONE! Therefore, there is no point in wondering how to choose a pillow for a baby, or what is the best one for him. Lying down without a pillow is simply the safest for a small child.
The market offers a lot of products that make a cute decorative addition, although they are not needed by a toddler. Unfortunately, they can also turn out to be dangerous. Moreover, parents tend to perceive a newborn baby and its needs analogically to a teenage child or an adult, and from this perspective they want to ensure its comfort, especially during sleep. Placing a baby in a crib with its head on a pillow, next to the teddy bear received from grandparents and covering it with a quilt and blanket seems to be a manifestation of parental love and care, but it is not a safe solution.
Pillow and safety
An infant's mobility is not as well developed as that of an adult. At this stage in life the child cannot independently change the position in the bed, and if he / she succeeds in it involuntarily, e.g. during sleep, there is a high probability that he will not be able to return to the starting position or lie down in a different way, and this may even cause suffocation . Therefore, it is worth prophylactically limiting the number of items in baby cot to a minimum. It is especially recommended to avoid pillows, mascots or extra blankets.
Watch out for SIDS
A lot of cases SIDS, i.e. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)applies to children sleeping on pillows. SIDS is considered to be the most common cause of death in infants between the ages of 3 and 6 months of age.
The presence of a pillow in an infant's bed is a significant risk factor and therefore increases the likelihood of SIDS. This also applies to specialized pillows, intended to prevent the child from rolling over during sleep and to protect against suffocation. Unfortunately, research shows that these products not only do not fulfill their role, but also pose an additional risk.
