If you are wondering whether air conditioning is safe for your child, this article will provide you with the necessary information and practical tips.

    Air conditioning and newborn: what do you need to know?

    Newborns are extremely delicate and susceptible to changes in their immediate environment. This is due to their not yet fully developed defense mechanisms. Their system thermoregulation, i.e. the ability to independently maintain an appropriate body temperature, is still very immature.

    Expert advises

    Newborns are much more sensitive to fluctuations in ambient temperature than older children or adults. For this reason, it is advisable to maintain a stable temperature in the newborn's room, preferably between 20-22°C. Children at this stage still have a poorly developed immune system, which makes them more susceptible to infections and irritations.

    That is why it is recommended to be exceptionally careful when discussing the topic of air conditioning and newborns. precautions.

    Air conditioning and baby: what should you remember?

    As a child grows and develops, his or her ability to body temperature regulation and resistance to external factors gradually increase. Babies, although more resilient than newborns, are still sensitive to environmental conditions, and the use of air conditioning requires just as much caution.

    It is important to use air conditioning in a home environment in an appropriate manner. This will allow both the baby and the parents to enjoy comfortable and healthy environment, which is crucial for the child's further development. How to properly use air conditioning when caring for such small children as a newborn or an infant?

    Air conditioning and a small child: hazards and precautions

    Air conditioning can be safe for a newborn or infant, but there are certain risks that parents should be aware of so that it is used appropriately and does not harm the baby. Below are the most important aspects:

    • Dry air: Air conditioning can lead to a decrease in humidity in the room, which can cause the delicate skin and mucous membranes of the newborn to dry out. As a result, dry mucous membranes are more susceptible to irritation and infection.
    • Direct cold air blowing: Cold air from an air conditioner directed directly at a newborn can cause the baby to cool down and even lead to a cold.
    • Contaminants in the air conditioner: Air conditioners can collect dust, mold, and other allergens in their filters, which, if not cleaned regularly, can become released into the air.

    Air conditioning and a newborn or infant at home: tips for safe use of air conditioning

    Air conditioning can be used in a newborn or infant's room. However, this requires taking appropriate precautions. If the following rules are followed, air conditioning can be helpful in maintaining comfortable conditions for small children, especially on hot days, without negatively affecting their health.

    • Maintain proper humidity: Using a humidifier or air purifier with humidification function in a room where air conditioning is running, it can help maintain optimal humidity (around 40-60%). This will help you avoid the risk of the air drying out.
    • Monitoring the temperature in your baby's room: it is worth getting an additional room thermometer, which will help maintain a constant temperature in the room, not lower than 20°C. Avoid setting the temperature too low, so as not to catch a cold in the baby, especially at night.
    • Avoid direct airflow: Adjust the air conditioner so that the air is not directed directly at the baby's bed. You can also use the oscillation function, which distributes the air evenly around the room, minimizing the risk of hypothermia.
    • Clean your air conditioner regularly: Clean filters and regular maintenance of the air conditioner are essential if we want the air conditioning to be safe for the baby. Dirty filters can spread allergens, molds and other harmful factors that can affect the health of the child.

    Let's remember not to approach the topic of air conditioning in the environment of the youngest children uncritically. The best solution will be a balanced approach, taking into account all possible risks and benefits.

    When to give up air conditioning around children?

    Air conditioning and a newborn or infant is a subject that requires consideration and responsibility. Especially in situations where it is advisable abandonment of air conditioning. Below are some examples of such circumstances:

    • respiratory infections: Cold air from the air conditioner can worsen symptoms such as cough, runny nose, or shortness of breath, which is especially risky if the child is already suffering from an infection;
    • allergies and asthma: Air conditioning can spread allergens like dust and mold if the filters aren’t cleaned regularly. This can worsen allergy or asthma symptoms in children;
    • cold or weakness of the body: when an infant is weakened, e.g. after an illness or vaccination, cold air can be an additional stress for the body, which can delay the healing process;
    • significant temperature differences:

    Expert advises

    Remember that in situations where the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the outside environment is too large, in extreme cases, the infant may experience thermal shock. Especially when moving frequently with the child between these extreme temperature environments.

    In such cases, it is recommended to use alternative cooling methods, such as using an air purifier with a humidification function, airing the room early in the morning or late in the evening when the outside temperature drops, or using a fan.

    An alternative to air conditioning: an air purifier with humidification function

    An air purifier with a humidification function can be a great alternative to air conditioning in a baby's room. This device not only removes pollutants such as dust, pollen and allergens, but also maintains the right level of air humidity, which is crucial for the health of the child.

    This minimizes the risk of skin and mucous membrane irritation and ensures a comfortable, natural airflow that is gentle on the baby's sensitive respiratory system.

    Using an air purifier with a humidification function according to the manufacturer's recommendations helps ensure that your baby breathes clean, properly humidified air, contributing to their health and well-being.
